Fatal workplace accidents increased for 2021 as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Over 5,000 people died on the job in 2021, an almost 10% increase from the prior year.  More men than women died from work-related accidents (4,741 men and 448 women).  Black workers died at a rate 20% greater than in 2020.

The deadliest professions were transportation related jobs because of motor vehicle accidents.  1,320 people died in work-related accidents in transportation and work-related accidents topped the causation of workplace deaths.  Fires and explosions caused 850 deaths.  Intentional fatalities rose to 718 deaths.

Family members should understand their legal rights including benefits available for dependents.  In Wisconsin, benefits are routinely four times annual salary.
